Nuraphone – the successful product of personalised sound engineering and ingenuity

Founded by engineer Dr Dragan Petrovic and otologist Dr Luke Campbell, Nura is a consumer electronics company that struck the sound technology market with their debut headphone — Nuraphone. Designed and manufactured with Nura’s proprietary technology, Nuraphone personalises user auditory experience by monitoring the individual user’s otoacoustic emissions — the low-level sounds given off by the cochlea in response to auditory stimulus, and adjusting sound based on these measurements. Nuraphone is the only patent-protected consumer electronic headphone to personalise sound via measuring otoacoustic emissions and is the first company ever to add active noise cancellation to headphones via a downloadable software update.

In 2016 Nura initially started a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise $100,000 USD to bring the Nuraphone to market. However, the Kickstarter campaign unexpectedly raised approximately $1.8M USD — becoming the largest crowdfunding sum in Australian history. Nura raised an additional $6M USD in seed finance through Blackbird Ventures in May 2017.

Since its launch on the 3rd of October 2017, Nuraphone has been met with largely favourable reviews, with TechAdvisor giving the product a rating of 4/5 and describing the Nuraphone sound quality as, “… ridiculously good, providing an expansive and detailed sound across all frequencies.”

Nuraphone’s pioneering success has paved a solid road between engineering, biomechanics, and user experience that has potentially widened the scope of innovative consumer electronics. Nuraphone’s strong emphasis on custom personalisation and user adaptability makes it an alluring product to consumers within the sound technology market.
